The latest data from the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) highlights a persistent challenge for local vehicle owners. While concerted efforts across Ontario led to a 22% decrease in thefts over the last year, the tactics used by organized crime groups continue to evolve, particularly in Whitby, Oshawa, and the surrounding Durham Region.

• The Numbers: Year-to-date, Durham Region has seen over 700 reported vehicle thefts, averaging roughly 15 occurrences per week in the last month alone.
• Targeted Vehicles: High-end SUVs and domestic trucks remain the primary targets, accounting for nearly 46% of all thefts in the province.
  
  
  
• Recent Activity: Organized Crime Links: In late April, DRPS issued a warrant for a suspect involved in an inter-provincial organized theft ring, specifically targeting vehicles in the GTA for trafficking and export.
  • New Tactics: Beyond traditional "relay attacks," there has been a significant rise in vehicle finance fraud and VIN-altering ("re-VINing"), where stolen vehicles are resold domestically using forged documentation.
  • Local Incident: Earlier this month, a high-speed intervention in Oshawa led to the recovery of a vehicle stolen by youth suspects, highlighting that theft occurs at all levels—from opportunistic joyrides to professional heists.
